An Overview of Voice Recognition Software

This short report explores some questions about using voice recognition software. VR software was designed to train a computer to recognize an individual’s voice and speech patterns for the purpose of dictation and/or voice-controlled computer commands. The benefits of the technology include reducing repetitive motion injuries and enabling disabled people to control a computer using their voice only. VR software was not, however, developed as a tool for transcribing interviews. In fact, today’s computing power is not up to this task due to the nuances and complexities inherent in the spoken word. This capability is still 10-15 years away and most likely will not be realized until the promise of ‘quantum desktop computing’ becomes a reality.
