After Color Management: Editing Images

Discusses circumstance in which one might want to edit the digital image information.

When Should I Consider Editing the Digital Image?

With a calibrated monitor, you are better equipped to judge the digital image. You might find that you are still wish to adjust the digital image for a variety of reasons such as:

  • You want to resize or crop you digital image to fit into a PowerPoint presentation or web page.

  • The original slides had faulty exposure, are aged, or are photographs of imperfect documents which you would like to correct in the digital image.

  • The original slides were on Kodachrome or a similar, highly saturated stock, and the scanned, digital versions are too blue/green in comparison. These images are difficult for slide scanners to interpret and can return digital images that are slightly dark or with “skewed” color (usually too blue/green).

In these situations you will want to edit the digital image information and create a new version of the file. Our tutorial, Basic Image Editing Techniques in Adobe Photoshop, can get you started.

We strongly recommend that you calibrate your monitor before editing images as this will ensure that your resulting images will appear as you intend on other calibrated monitors, projectors and printers.
