Blogs are no different than Discussion Boards and, if you don't have access to a Course Management System, they may be just what you're looking for.

Blog software (see below for free packages) will allow you to post
announcements and topics for discussion. Students can provide feedback
by adding comments to the post and the instructor thereby encourages
participation in a fun and informal way. Besides, most students
probably keep blogs themselves, so the environment will be comfortable
to them.
