Using Quizzes and Discussion Boards

So you feel your students may not be keeping up … "Quiz" them on a certain reading, or material, and encourage online discussion. This provides them incentive to stay up-to-date, while leaving out any "sanction" an actual quiz may carry.

Quizzes can be set up that will give the student immediate feedback - they'll know what they know or do not know. To begin, find the Quiz function in your CMS. It may look something like this:

Follow the steps (they will differ with each CMS) and eventually you'll arrive at a window similar to the one below that will prompt you to add questions and then select the correct answer(s).

Remember, you can always contact your division's computing facilities for detailed instructions.

You may also wish to use Hot Potatoes to create quizzes and drills outside of your CMS.

Besides quizzes, Discussion Boards can encourage student involvement by creating "threaded" conversations between the students and instructor (or without). You might want to require that they check in each week and make a comment.
