Relationship with Faculty and Other TAs

Professor:
Because I am so busy with my research, teaching, and committee work (and trying to have a life, too), I need my TA’s to keep the communication lines open. Unfortunately, because of how busy I am, it is easy for things to fall off of the radar. I also may be assuming that you are doing fine and forget that you may need guidance in how or what to teach in the section. The bottom line: don’t hesitate to send an email, initiate contact, and/or follow-up with me.

TA:
As a new TA, professors may seem intimidating but they really do want you to approach them to discuss questions and/or ideas about section. Another thing to remember is that students are often more comfortable talking to a TA about class related issues. The professor needs and wants to hear the student feedback.

If you are in doubt about the best way to approach the professor, ask her during your first meeting. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for a professor to forget to arrange a pre-quarter meeting. If this happens, it is perfectly okay to make the overture to set it up. When you meet with the professor for the first time, have a list of questions with you such as:

  • What do you expect me to do?
  • How do I get and return homework?
  • How do I know where you are at in the course/what you have talked about in lecture?
  • Will I be conducting review sessions before exams?
  • How much help am I allowed to provide students on the materials they will be graded on?
  • Is there a course website?  Section website?
  • Do I provide solutions for homework?  If so, for every problem?

Just remember that communication between you and the professor is imperative to ensure a successful experience so don’t be afraid to ask!
