Usually, I look at the material for the week and try to prepare based on my answers to two questions:
- How can I summarize the information and prepare hands-on practice examples on the material so that by itself section would be enough preparation for an exam given the next day?
- Which part of the material or what techniques do I want the students to remember a year after the class is over?
It is safe to assume that most students in an introductory class would not major in your subject so try to make your teaching relevant to an audience with varying interests.
Professor:
It is hard to remember what it was like to not know something. After you learn it, it is part of you. You can make your section valuable by asking yourself (and your students) what parts of the course material are the most difficult to learn. By asking yourself that question, you will be able to develop valuable learning activities.
