Equipment in the Media Lab assists students and faculty in education access videotapes, laser discs, language audio cassettes, and interactive CD-ROM's.

We provide listening services for ESL, foreign languages, Communication Studies, and Sociology; and viewing services for materials from the Instructional Media Library and Film & Television Archives. The following highlights the equipment currently available at the Lab.

Video Equipment

  • 23 VHS video players
  • 6 NTSC 3/4" U-matic players
  • 1 Tri-standard VHS player
  • 15 Laser disc players

These machines are either connected to individual viewing carrels or can be programmed to viewing rooms.

Audio Equipment

  • 10 Listen/Record audio cassette decks
  • Walkman-type audio cassette players
  • Portable language lab console and student decks

The Listen/Record audio cassette decks allow students to record their voices on the instructional tapes in order to practice pronunciation. It also has a special skipback function that allows repetition of a desired word or phrase – useful for transcribing.

The portable language lab console provides the capability to give multiple simultaneous voice lessons, as well as allowing the instructor to listen to or communicate with an individual student or the entire class. The system also uses headsets and decks that allow students to record their voice and/or the broadcasted lesson. This equipment is frequently requested for use by language departments as well as for Speak Exams and other classroom tests.

Multimedia Equipment

  • 5 Macintosh Interactive Multimedia Workstations
  • 2 PC Interactive Multimedia Workstations

The computers in the Media Lab are set up to accommodate CD-ROM programs that are available at the lab's front desk. The computers should only be used for these programs. If you are looking for a place where you can have email and/or Internet access, you may open an account with CLICC and use their labs in Powell or in the Math/Sciences building.
