Classroom Updates for Fall 2009

Happy Fall Quarter 2009!

Audio Visual Services would like to welcome all the faculty back for instruction this fall. During the summer, there have been several updates to instructional technology in the general assignment classrooms that we would like to highlight below:

More Media Classrooms

Five new media classrooms have been built in Royce Hall. They are capable of data projection, DVD/VHS playback, and voice amplification. Classroom computers will eventually be added to each room.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, Classroom Technology Design and Maintenance will continue to convert approximately twenty more regular classrooms into media classrooms.

Voice Amplification

Over the summer, the majority of classrooms had their wireless microphone system upgraded to the Audio-Technica unit. This transition began in 2007 and will conclude this academic year. Faculty and staff can continue to request a wireless microphone like usual and Audio Visual Services will assign the appropriate model for the classroom.

Additionally, the number of classrooms with installed “wired” lavalier microphone has decreased to only rooms with capacities greater than 200. This is because the equipment is difficult to support and our number of working units has decreased over the years. Overall, we recommend that anyone interested in voice amplification should check out a wireless microphone since eventually the wired units will be discontinued.

Document Cameras

An AverMedia document camera was added to Boelter 3400 and several more auditoriums will have a similar unit installed throughout the year. These units function as either an overhead camera or a transparency projector and will replace the traditional “overhead” projectors that are normally assigned to classrooms.

35mm Slide Projection

Kodak stopped manufacturing 35mm slide projectors in 2004 and slide usage has decreased steadily since. In order to keep our current equipment in good working order, we have removed most of the stand or cart-mounted slide projectors from the classrooms. The majority of the projectors left are installed in either cabinets or booths.

Media Conversion Grants are available through the Office of Instructional Development to help scan 35mm slides. A singular 35mm projector can still be placed in most classrooms on a quarterly basis; however, dual slide projection requires being assigned to a classroom with the installed infrastructure.
