Call for Nominations 2008-2009
We are now accepting nominations for The Brian P. Copenhaver Award for Innovation in Teaching with Technology. Please nominate a faculty member who in your view has been innovative in using technology to successfully enhance student learning. Last day to submit nominations is January 30, 2009
Who may be nominated for an award?
All UCLA undergraduate faculty (ladder and non-ladder) are eligible.
Who may make a nomination?
UCLA instructors, students, and staff may nominate an innovative use of
technology in teaching for consideration by the review committee. Faculty are
encouraged to nominate their own work.
How are nominations made?
Use our simple online
form to submit your nomination.
In addition to information about the nominee, the course(s) and the
individual submitting the nomination, the form requires two brief responses
about the innovation:
1. Describe the innovative use of technology in undergraduate instruction.
2. Describe why you think this innovation is important to undergraduate instruction.
Please note that while nominated faculty are quite often excellent teachers as well, the purpose of this award is to recognize their innovative efforts using technology to enhance learning. What is the definition of "innovation"?
The faculty review committee will be assessing the nominations based on a broad
definition of technology and teaching innovation. For example:
Has it significantly improved student learning? or
Has it significantly improved use of university resources? or
Is it an innovative use of existing and broadly used technology? or
Is it a new teaching tool, approach, or instructional material? or
Does it have the potential for wide-spread use in undergraduate education?
The Faculty Committee on
Education Technology established the Award to recognize the innovative
use of technology in undergraduate instruction and to support the sharing of
teaching experiences throughout UCLA. In the past five years, 195 nominations
have been received for 149 faculty in 51 departments. Awards have been
presented to 20 faculty members. Interviews with the award winners as well as
with many of the nominees are available for viewing.
In recognition of Brian Copenhaver's leadership of the College and to ensure
his legacy at UCLA, Richard and Barbara Bergman have endowed the Award. The
FCET and UCLA are grateful to the Bergmans for their generous and thoughtful
support.
Recipients will receive an award for use in their teaching and research. Awards
will be presented at a campus-wide event in Spring 2009.
