Test of Oral Proficiency (TOP)--

The next testing date will take place on January 15, 22 and 29. Please visit this page at a later time to register.

Students who plan to work as a teaching assistant (TA) at UCLA and are non-native English speaking international students must pass the TOP before working as a TA in any department at UCLA. Only non-citizens are considered international students. A "native speaker" of English is currently defined by Graduate Division as someone who has learned English from his/her parents.

No alternatives to TOP are accepted. This means for example that Permanent Residents and students who earned undergraduate or graduate degrees in the US must take the exam.

Students who do not plan to work as a teaching assistant (TA) at UCLA do not need to take TOP.

NEW TEST-TAKERS: Please take advantage of the links on the sidebar to the left that provide useful information on the format of the exam as well as useful tips for the exam. We do not encourage newly admitted students to take the TOP upon arrival, before they have had interaction with native speakers.

REPEAT TEST-TAKERS: It is highly recommended that test-takers seek counseling from TOP coordinators to review their exam before registering for the exam again.

More detailed information about the exam is available in links on the sidebar to the left.
